About the Author

The Queen of Montana - Border

 S. Scott Hula is the pen name of Sheila Scott Hula, an award-winning newspaper reporter and network television producer.
Hula grew up roaming the mountains and valleys of western Montana, where she developed a love of the land that has never faded.

Although she moved from the Last Best Place many years ago, her time there still forms the core of her identity. Writing The Queen of Montana, she says, meant she never had to leave.

Hula has worked in nearly every capacity in the news media — from covering the town council for small weekly newspapers to producing CNN TravelGuide, one of the network’s most popular programs, to publishing Around the Rings, for many years the world’s leading source of business news about the Olympics.

She worked on The Queen of Montana in between Olympic Games and international and interstate moves.

Hula is a proud graduate of Helena Senior High School and a less-proud dropout of the University of Montana in Missoula. She still hopes to obtain an undergraduate degree someday.

Hula and her husband live in Mount Dora, Florida, where dogs and orchids — but no horses — abound.

A Career in Storytelling

The Queen of Montana - Border

Newspapers

The Queen of Montana - Border

Hula began her career covering local government for small weekly newspapers — learning to find the story in the details that larger outlets missed. That instinct for the telling detail runs through every page of The Queen of Montana.

Television

As a producer at CNN, Hula developed TravelGuide — one of the network’s most watched programs. The work took her across the world and sharpened her eye for place, character, and the stories that make a location come alive.

The Olympics

The Queen of Montana - Border

Hula founded and published Around the Rings, the world’s leading source of business news about the Olympic movement. She covered multiple Games across multiple continents — and found time, between all of it, to finish a novel set in nineteenth-century Montana.
